Sanchi Stupa

India is full of beautiful monuments which attract a number of foreign tourists every year. Sanchi is a small village in Raisen District of the State of Madhya Pradesh, India, and is famous for the old beautiful monuments present there. Sanchi is located 46 km north east of Bhopal, and 10 km from Besnagar and Vidisha in the central part of the state of Madhya Pradesh.StupaSanchi2 300x198 Sanchi Stupa

Sanchi is known to be one of the important places of Buddhist pilgrimage and it has a number of Buddhist monuments constructed many centuries back. Sanchi is a nagarpanchayat in Raisen district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

The Great Stupa at Sanchi was originally commissioned by the emperor Ashoka the Great in the third century. Stupa is surrounded by Totanas here which is a symbol of love, peace, trust and courage. The nucleus of the Great Stupa was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of the Buddha. It was crowned by a parasol like structure known as chatra, which symbolize high rank and was intended to honorand shelter the relics.

Sunga period

The stupa of Sanchi is believed to be destroyed by the Sunga emperor, PusyamitraSunga, and was rebuilt by his son Agnimitra. Later in the same period, the stupa was expanded with stone slabs and was given almost twice its original size. The design was changed a bit and the dome was flattened near the top. It was crowned by three superimposed parasols within a square railing. With its many tiers, it was a symbol of the dharma, the Wheel of the Law. The dome of Sachistupa was set on a high circular drum meant for circumambulation, which could be accessed via a double staircase.

Satavahana period

The gateways and the balustrade at the Sanchistupa were build long time back and are believed to have been commissioned by the Satavahana. An inscription records the gift of one of the top architraves of the Southern Gateways by the artisans of the Satavahana king Satakami. It is so beautifully designed that although made of stone, they were carved and constructed in the manner of wood.

The gateways were covered with narrative scultpures and are very attractive. These outstanding and well-designed sculptures showed the scenes from the life of the Buddha. The viewers can easily relate themselves to the sculptures of the Buddha everyday life and makes it easier for them to understand the Buddhist creed as relevant to their lives. Most of the people donate money at Sanchistupa for the embellishment of the stupa to attain spiritual merit. Devotees who donate money towards a scripture would often choose their favorite scene from the life of the Buddha and then have their names inscribed on it.

The stones carving the Buddha do not show human figures. The artists represented him by certain attributes like horse on which he left his father’s home, his footprint, or a canopy under the Bodhi tree at the point of his enlightenment. It was believed that human body would be too confining for the Buddha.

Later construction of Sanchi Stupa

Many stupas and other religious Buddhist and early Hindu structures were added later in the following centuries. Temple 17 is known to be the earliest Buddhist temples build in the Gupta period.  It is beautifully designed and consists of a flat roofed square sanctum with a portico and four pillars. The temple gets an almost classical appearance by its elegantly carved front and highly decorated pillars.

With the decline of Buddhism in India, the monuments of Sanchi went out of use and fell into a state of disrepair.

Today, around fifty monuments remain on the hills of Sanchi, including three stupas and several temples. It is visited by many visitors and tourists to see its beauty and well-designed stupas and sculptures and the temples constructed are really attractive to look at.

Khajuraho

Khajuraho, an Indian village in Madhya Pradesh, located in Chhatarpur is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. It has the largest collection of Hindu and Jain temples and is famous for their erotic sculptures. It is also considered to be one of the seven wonders of India and is listed in UNESCO world heritage site.

Architecture of Khajuraho Temple

The khajuraho temples were among the most important monuments in India and is built in a span of 200 years, ranging from 950 to 1150. The complete area is enclosed by walls. Originally it had over 80 Hindu temples but now only 25 remains that are built over an area of about 21 square kilometers. The temples there are fine examples of Indian architecture styles which are popular due to their explicit depiction of the traditional way of sexual life during medieval times.

khajuraho 300x200 Khajuraho

The architecture of khajuraho temples can be related to northern Indian shikhara temple style or a panchayatana plan. Besides a few Jain temples, the various Hindu temples are dedicated to god’s trio Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva and various Devi forms.

Temples Famous for Erotic Art

Though the temples are famous for erotic art, there are no sexual or erotic images inside the temples near the figures of deities. Only the external carvings bear some of those. It is believed that to portray the arts there, one must leave their sexual desired outside the temple premises. The deities of the temples are portrayed as atmas and do not refer to any physical body. People suggest that the images there give an idea of tantric sexual practices. Some 10% of the images depict sexual art whereas others show the common life of normal Indian man and their activities.

Because of the erotic art forms here, the site is often referred to as Kama sutra temple. But they do not illustrate the positions of the Vatsyayana’s famous sutra’s philosophy. They just focus on pleasure rather than procreation.

It is also believed that the Chandela monarchs built this temple between 950 and 1150. At that time, Tantric tradition was practices. In those times, boys lived in brahmacharya until they became men and they can learn about household works by examining these images. All the sculptures present here clearly tells that these temples would have required a number of trained sculptors.

Kamakhya Temple

Situated in the Nilachal Hill, Assam, Kamakhya or shakti temple is dedicated to various forms of mother goddess. Hindu and tantric pilgrims often consider this place an important destination. Chilarai from the Koch dynasty constructed this temple in 1565. The original old structure was believed to be destroyed by Kala Pahar but the current structure consists of three chambers with idols and images of lord ganesha and other hindu gods and goddesses on the outside and a beehive like shikhara. kamakhya temple in assam 300x194 Kamakhya Temple

The general pilgrims use the western chamber which is large and rectangular. Middle chamber, added later, is a square and has an idol of goddess and images of Naranarayana and other related gods on the walls. It leads to the sanctum sandtorum through a cave which is a natural underground spring and flows in the bedrock through a yoni shaped cleft. The mensuration of goddess Kamakhya or Shakti is celebrated every summer during the Ambuvaci festival.

The legend of this famous temple says that after the Koch Bihar royal family was banned from offering puja here by Devi, the temple faced a lot of hardship without their support. By this time, Ahoms’ interest grew in this temple and the later Ahom kings supported the temple by renovating it. Later, Krishnaram Bhattacharyya, a famous mahant of Shakta became the spiritual guru for many Brahmins. Siba Singh, the king gave the management and land of Kamakhya temple to Krishnaram Bhattacharyya. The guru and his successors resided on the top of Nilachal hill and were called Parbatiya Gosains.durga at kamakhya temple 300x216 Kamakhya Temple

Worshippers consider this place a sacred sacrificial site and devotees often go there with goats and other animals as offerings to Shakti. According to Kalika Purana, Kamakhya is described as yielder of all desired, Shiva’s young bride and salvation giver. Kamakhya is also khown as Shakti. On the other hand, the Yogi Tantra relates Kamakhya with goddess kali. Banikanta Kakati says about the existence of a tradition which was famous among the priests. The tradition was established by Naranarayana and it tells that the Garos, a matrilineal people, worshipped Kamakhya by sacrificing pigs as an offering to the goddess.

The two modes of worship, Vamachara and Dakshinachara, are both used to worship the goddess. Often flowers are offered to the goddess but many also believed in male animal offering to please the goddess.

The Kamakhya temple is considered a major centre for Tantra worship and due to this reason, thousands of devotes of Tantra are attracted here in Ambuvaci, an annual festival celebrated here. Manasha Puja is another sacred celebration that takes place here every year. Kamakhya people also take part in Durga Puja celebration during Navratri, in the autumn. This celebration often runs for five days and it attracts several thousand people from around the country.

Golconda

Golconda is one of the important monuments of India. Golkonda is golconda fort entrance 300x225 Golcondalocated 11 km west of the city of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh state, India.

Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah Wali, the fourth Qutb king was the builder of Golkonda, situated west of Hyderabad. Hyderabad is a ruined city of south-central India and capital of ancient Kingdom of Golkonda. It is believed that the fort derives its name from Golla Konda, which is a Telugu word for Shepherd’s Hill. It is said that a shepherd boy came across an idol on the hill which led to the construction of a mud fort by the then Kalkatiya dynasty ruler of the kingdom around the site.

Construction of Golconda

The construction of the fort was done with great understanding keeping each and every small thing in mind. A large wall is constructed few feet before the entry gate of the fort so as to prevent elephants and soldiers from having a proper ramp to run and break the gates.

The city and fortress are built on a granite hill that is 120 meters high and is surrounded by massive crenelated ramparts. Over the period of 62 years the mud fort was expanded by the three Qutb Shahi Kings into a massive fort of granite and extended the structure around 5 km in circumference. At that time it remained the capital of the Qutb Shahi dynasty until 1590 when the capital was shifted to Hyderabad.

Golconda- The city of Diamond180px Hope Diamond Golconda

At its time, Golkonda had the only known diamond mines in the world. It was once renowned for the diamonds found on the southeast and cut in the city. The f180px Darya e Noor Diamond of Iran 150x150 Golcondaortress city within the walls was famous for diamond trade as the mines of Golkonda themselves yielded diamonds of trifling quantity. Golkonda became the market city of the diamond trade of that time and the gems sold there came from a number of mines. Europeans knew that diamonds were found only in there fabled mines and thus magnificent diamonds were taken from these mines to the surrounding regions. Darya-e-Nur, Nur-Ul-Ali Diamond, the Koh-i-noor, The Hope Diamond, and The Regent Diamond were some of the famous diamonds excavated from these mines at that time.

The Forts of Golconda

golconda fort 300x224 Golconda

Golkonda consists of four distinct forts with a 10 km long outer wall with 87 semi circular bastions, eight gateways, four drawbridges and number of royal apartments and halls, temples, mosques, magazines, stables inside. The lowest of these is the outermost enclosure into which we enter by the “Fateh Darwaza” near the south which is studded with giant iron spikes. The voice of hand clapped at a certain point below the dome at the entrance gates can be heard clearly at the highest point about kilometer away, and this worked as a warning note to the royals in case of an attack.

The entire massive fort is the best example of architectural planning and its magnificence.

Bala Hissar Gate is the main entrance to the fort located on the eastern side. It has a pointed arch which is bordered by rows of scroll work and the spandrels have yalis and decorated roundels. The area above the door has peacocks with ornate tails and the design of peacock and lions are a blend of Hindu- Muslim architecture. Toli Masjid, situated at Karwan is about 2 km from the Golkonda fort and the mosque inside it is divided into two halls.

Surroundings and the Inner Beauty of Golconda

The fort of Golconda is known for its magical acoustic system and the palaces, factories, water supply system and the famous ‘Rahban’ cannon. Within the fort are also some of the major attractions which attract the visitors. It is also famous that there is a secret underground tunnel which leads from the Durbar Hall and ends in one the palaces at the foot of the hill. The fort also has the tombs of the Qutub Shahi Kings which have Islamic architecture and are encircled by beautiful gardens and numerous exquisitely carved stones.

The two individual pavilions on the outer side of Golconda are also major attraction and the Kala Mandir located in the fort has its own importance. The wonderful acoustic system of Golconda fort speaks volumes about the architecture of the fort and the ventilation of the fort is absolutely fabulous having exotic designs. The fort comprises of huge gates which are decorated with large pointed iron spikes so as to prevent it from elephants. Also in order to fortify the fort it is encircled by 11 km long outer wall.
