History:

Lohri was celebrated on 13^thJanuary every year.  This is the main festival of Punjabi’s.  It is also celebrated in the name of Dulha Bhatti. He was the person who robbed the rich and served the poor. He once rescued a girl from kidnappers and adopted as his daughter.

He also helped many couples to get married who were in love. He was punished and kept in jail for this purpose by  King Akbar. Even then, he continued his help with the help of his friends. Akbar came to know about this one day and ordered his soldiers to kill him.

Celebration:

On the early morning of Lohri, they arrange large bonfires and throw popcorn, puffed rice into it. Young people get gathered around the fire (parikrama) and sing “Aadar aye dilather jaye” .The dance performed by men around the fire is called as Bhangra.  Women do not participate in Bhangra. Children will be in full excitement and go to every door for prasad by singing songs.

People wear bright clothes for this dance. This is the way they offer prayers to the God of Agni. After the completion of parikrama, people visit their relatives and friends to exchange sweets. The Prasad consists of til, gajak, jiggery. At the end of the day, delicious dinner will be prepared. Women prepare a pudding which consists of spinach, mustard leaf and lentil which is cooked in sugarcane juice. This pudding helps to purify the blood and clean the body.

Importance:

Lohri is a symbol of love and this is the time where people meet each other and have fun. Lohri also indicates the entry of “Makar Rashi”. Many SMS (usually in hindi) and greeting cards are available online. Lohri celebrations will reach to the peak in the house of newly married couples and new born babies.

It gives a break from their busy schedule.  It is called as Pongal in Andhra Pradesh and Uttaravan in Tamil Nadu. Women’s dance in this festival is called as Gidda. History:

Guru Nanak Jayanthi is celebrated on the eve of first birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. Guru Nanak was the first Sikh Guru.  This is the most scared festival of Sikkhism. Guru Nanak ji was born on 1469 at Tolevandi. He was the founder of Sikh religion.It is celebrated on the full moon day of Kartik Poornima.

The date varies from year to year depending on the rotation of the moon. Guru Nanak was a great saint and great singer. There is a Gurudwar and sarovar ( holy tank) at Lahore ( birth place of Guru Nanak). This is the place where most of the devotees visit on Guru Nanak Jayanthi.

Guru Nanak also composed many poems in the name of God and manhood.  The most popular preaching of Guru Nanak is “Serve God, Serve humanity. Only Service to humanity shall secure for us a place in heaven”. This is absolutely true.

Celebration:

The holy book of the Sikh is called as Guru Granth Sahib. Before two days of the Guru Nanak birthday, Akhand Path is done. Akhand Path is continuous reading of hyms continuously for forty-eight hours.  The day before the Guru Nanak birthday, there will be a procession called as Nagarkirtan.

This procession is led by five people known as Panj Pyaras which means Five Beloved Ones. The procession is done with the Sikh flag known as Nishan Sahib. Gurudwaras are beautifully decorated with flowers.

They sing the hymns in their locality. The passage is covered with banners, gates decorated flags and flowers.  They do this to convey the message of Guru Nanak to the public. In the evening, Gurudwaras are lightened with candles and earthern lamps.

Importance:

On Gurpurab, the celebration starts in the early morning at 4 AM. Morning 4AM to 5AM is called as Amrit Vela. This is done by Katha (story) and Kirtan (hymns).  After this, they will have Langar (lunch). This is the free lunch provided the volunteers of Gurudwaras.

The idea behind this is to provide free lunch to everybody irrespective of caste, color and creed. Night prayers are also held which is called as Rehras. The hyms continue up to 1.20 AM because this is the time when Guru Nanak was born and the festival ends at 2AM.

These celebrations are most colorful in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.  In Gurudwar, Morning Prayer is called as Japji and evening prayer is called as Sohila. Guru Nanak died in 1538 AD.

Ram Navami is celebrated on the occasion of Lord Rama’s birthday. In 2012, Ram Navami falls on April first.  Ram Navami falls on the ninth day of the Sukla Paksha. After consuming this pudding, all the three Queens were conceived. Queen Kausalya gave birth to Lord Rama was born on navami. Queen Sumitra gave birth to Lakshmana and Shatrughna. Queen Kaikeyi gave birth to Bharatha.

Celebration:

Ram Navami day starts early in the morning with the Lord Rama Sita Kalyanam. After the completion of Kalayanam, Panagam is offered to all the devotees that are present in that occasion. Panagam is a sweet drink prepared on this auspicious day with jaggery and pepper. Most of the devotees perform fast on this day to gain the blessings of the God Sri Lord Rama. Another famous part of this festival is Ratha Yatra.

The chariot will be decorated with full of garlands and four persons enact as Lord Sri Rama, his wife Sita, his brother Lakshamana and his devotee Hanuman and followed by several soldiers.  During the procession, devotees sing all the songs and mantras related to Lord Sri Rama. Another significance of the Ram Navami is Ramayana Parayana.

It is done by a pundit or a professional story teller. It starts on Ugadi and ends on Ram Navami which is of nine days.

Importance:
